GENESSA -- STUFFED ANIMALS! (Also found on the DOLLS page:) When Lady G was seven and a half years old, she and her family moved to a brand new community; some of the houses on her block were not even quite built yet. Nevertheless, some were, and young Lady G eagerly circled the block, calling out to any children she saw, either on the sidewalk, in the street or even up in the windows of the completed houses: "Would you like to be my friend?" When she got to the third corner (almost home) she encountered a girl slightly younger than herself: Betsy M. They struck up a conversation on a topic of mutual interest: pets. Lady G had a parakeet (Beebee, who would, on command, peck at a spoon until it toppled off the dining room table -- this was considered by the entire household to be an advanced trick, and Beebee was compelled to show off for visitors all and sundry) and Betsy, she said, had a multitude of pets. Would Lady G like to come see? Lady G certainly would. Her disappointment was minimal when Betsy's pets turned out to be stuffed animals, for this represented another abiding interest of Lady G's. For a while, Lady G habitually visited Betsy at her home, and in Betsy's bedroom, in Betsy's bed, the two children played happily with Betsy's considerable collection, which, Lady G recalls, included a cat toy made of rabbit fur, and smelling strongly of same. The girls were best friends. Then, one day, Lady G showed up at Betsy's door and was not permitted to enter. "My mommy says you can't come in," said Betsy, "unless you say you love Jesus Christ." "I can't say that," said Lady G, a Jew. "Just say it," pleaded Betsy. "You don't have to mean it. If you say it, you can come in!" "I can't do that," said Lady G, sadly. The two children never played together again.
